Does Botox Help with Migraines?

Migraines are a painful and highly debilitating medical condition that can be difficult to treat. This is especially true for individuals that suffer from chronic migraines more than 15 times a month. Though Botox is commonly regarded as a beauty product, it is a powerful neuromodulator that can be used to effectively treat several medical conditions. In addition to assisting with muscular spasms, overactive bladders, and cervical dystonia, Botox does help with migraines.

How does Botox Help with Migraines?

Botox can be injected into the muscles in the neck and head to reduce the severity and frequency of migraines. It can also reduce the other effects of migraines such as nausea and sensitivity to lights, sounds, and smells. Botox acts as a “roadblock” to reduce or stop the transmission of chemicals associated with nerve pain. A skilled specialist will inject Botox into selected areas once every 12 weeks. In some cases, relief can be felt as soon as 10 to 14 days after the initial injection. Other patients may not feel relief until several treatments are performed.

Where is Botox Injected for Migraine Treatments?

Botox is injected into several areas of the head and neck to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. These areas include:

  • Above the brow on either side of the head.
  • Above either ear into the left or right temple region.
  • The trapezius muscles at the base of the skull and between the shoulders and neck.

Please note that these injections should only be administered by a trained professional such as the experts at Bottle Service.

Side Effects and Other Considerations

Though Botox is a highly effective treatment for migraines, it can result in several side effects. Neck pain and stiffness at the injection site are the most common. Allergic reactions, such as swelling and hives, can also occur, but these reactions are rare.

Please note that Botox treatment may not be for you if you experience migraines fewer than 15 days in a month or experience different types of headaches (cluster, tension, etc.).
