If you work in any industry that requires heavy materials to be lifted by crane or any other method, it is important to know all of the current safe hoisting and rigging procedures. At Eagle West Crane & Rigging, our commitment to safety ensures that the safety of our crews, jobsites, and those we serve is the top priority at all times, so we strive to keep everyone involved in our operations up to date on hoisting safety.
Hoisting and Rigging Safety for Cranes
Whether you are a crane operator or work on a jobsite where rigging and hoisting equipment is being used, it is important to be aware of some of the different safety standards that go along with using this equipment. Some of the different categories of hoisting safety to be aware of include:
Hoisting and Rigging Hazards
Being aware of some of the different hazards that can be present during any hoisting procedure is extremely important. These could include external hazards and obstacles such as power lines and buildings as well as hazards presented by the job being done. Hazards included in any hoisting job can consist of the weight being lifted and the equipment being used.
Knowing the Equipment
Being aware of the equipment used for a job involving a crane and its safe operation is vital for the safety of any hoisting procedure. Knowing how to use hoisting equipment is important, and it is also vital to know how to store and care for it. Aside from the cranes themselves, the equipment involved that any operator should be aware of include but are not limited to:
- Fibre ropes
- Hitches
- Knots
- Slings
- Chains
- Blocking and cribbing
- All kinds of anchorage hardware
Proper Signalling Procedures
In any hoisting operation, having a crew that knows all of the proper signals for crane operation is vital for safety. A crane operator will not always have a clear line of sight on all of the different variables of a hoisting job, so spotters will need to be able to communicate non-verbally with the crane operator to ensure that the job is completed safely.
