Types of Precast Concrete Products

Precast concrete can be used for a wide variety of applications to create durable ready-to-use structural products. There are many different types of precast concrete products that can be used for all kinds of purposes and, at Eagle West Crane and Rigging, they provide delivery and installation services for some of the different varieties of precast concrete.

The Purpose of Precast Concrete

Precast concrete is produced using moulds in a controlled environment, meaning that the products created are incredibly strong and uniform in structure and appearance. By creating concrete products in this manner rather than using onsite moulds, the concrete cures without the interference of poor weather and products can be created quickly and efficiently. When uniformity and control are required, as is often the case for building materials, the benefits of precast concrete products exceed those of concrete formed onsite.

Different Types of Precast Concrete Products

The basic methods and materials used to create precast concrete products are similar for different applications, despite the fact that different types of precast products can have incredibly different uses. Depending on the shape, size, and grade of concrete used, some of the different types of precast concrete include:

Traffic Control and Obstruction Concrete Products

Many people see this type of precast concrete product on a daily basis. There are many different designs of roadside barriers that are made out of precast concrete. Most of the curbs and car barriers in parking areas are also made from precast concrete.

Landscaping and Retaining Wall Concrete Products

Retaining walls and hardscaping products are one of the most common implementations for precast products. This type of precast concrete uses forms that shape the concrete into stackable, interlocking blocks that provide stability and structure for walls, stairways, and other applications. The blocks can be incredibly large and entirely structural in purpose, as is the case with the OCTA-BLOC® system, or they can be smaller and more natural in appearance, as seen with the various Redi-Rock® retaining wall systems.

Construction Concrete Products

Tilt-up construction is a method of building that uses precast concrete to form walls, and it requires the use of a crane to lift the precast concrete elements into place. This type of precast concrete uses steel re-bar to strengthen the structure. Precast concrete systems like OCTA-BLOC® can also be used for certain types of construction, such as temporary structures.
