Knowing some simple alternative garden mulch ideas can help you find the right combination of mulching options for your particular gardening needs. At Just Mulch, they understand how important it is to select the right type of mulch for your unique garden. That is why they offer a selection of mulch and soil products for different garden types.
Alternative Garden Mulch Options
Some of the different alternative garden mulches that you can add to your garden in addition to regular bark mulch products include:
Wood Chips or Shredded Leaves
Spreading wood chips or shredded leaf mulch anywhere on your property, including flower beds, shrub borders, and garden pathways, can be a great way to add an extra pop of colour and aesthetic to your garden space; however, it is important to note that wood chips are not the best option for vegetable and annual flower beds, as the chips can get in the way when digging up the garden.
Grass Clippings
As one of the most readily available mulching options, grass clippings can be returned directly to the lawn after cutting to act as a natural fertilizer. Grass clippings can also be easily collected to be used as mulch in the garden. Thanks to its nitrogen-rich properties, grass clippings make a great mulching choice for vegetable gardens.
Compost
While adding compost to your garden can be a great way to enrich the soil and make plants happy, compost that has become too dry will not provide a good environment for plant roots to grow. When using compost in the garden, make sure to only spread a thin layer around plants and to top it off with another type of mulch, such as bark mulch. Doing so will help keep the compost biologically active and prevent it from drying out so that it can provide the maximum benefit to your plants.
Straw or Hay
Another great mulching option for vegetable gardens is straw or hay. Not only does it look aesthetically pleasing but it also provides most of the same benefits that other mulches have to offer, such as retaining soil moisture, preventing weed growth, and adding organic matter to the soil during the breakdown process. If you decide to use straw or hay as garden mulch, make sure that the hay is weed and seed free and to avoid piling hay or straw up around the stems of vegetables or the trunks of fruit trees.
