How to Increase Warehouse Storage Space

In order to help maximize your business’ storage space without having to expand your warehouse, their team has put together some simple tips on how to increase warehouse storage space.
1. Extend Racks Vertically
One of the easiest ways to increase storage space is to extend racks up toward the ceiling, if your business has enough headroom. In most cases, newer buildings will have a fire suppression sprinkler system installed in the rafters, so it is important to ensure that your racking system provides enough space between the sprinklers and your inventory. It is also a good idea to speak to a professional before extending racks vertically to ensure that the racking uprights and baseplates can withstand the load.
2. Install a Mezzanine
Installing a mezzanine above a floor-level process, such as a shipping or receiving area, can help double the floorspace in that part of the warehouse. When choosing an area to install a mezzanine, make sure to take into consideration the space needed for the columns and baseplates, as well as whether or not the floor will be able to support the weight of the mezzanine and the products being stored.
3. Reduce Aisle Width
While a wide aisle can often be reduced in size, it is important to first consider whether or not lifting equipment might be needed in those aisles and how wide of aisles they need to operate properly.
4. Evaluate and Change Storage Mediums
Switching from a lower storage density to a higher storage density can be another easy way to increase storage space. Consider replacing single-deep racks with push-back or drive-in racking systems to double the racking system’s storage capacity.
5. Use Underutilized Space
Try to find ways to use space that is currently being underutilized, such as by hanging racks above receiving or shipping doors for inbound or outbound products that still need to be processed. This can be an easy way to increase storage space for smaller or slower-moving items that do not need to be replenished as frequently.
