13 Sep 2022 Loading Ramps

If you utilize a forklift ramp or mobile loading ramp, it is important to ensure that it is in good working order before use. Regular inspections ensure compliance with important safety standards, minimizing the risk of accidents, property damage, and operator injury. These inspections are also useful for spotting signs that it is time to replace your loading ramp. To help you determine if it is time for a new mobile ramp or forklift ramp, the experts at Dura-Ramp have put together a list of 3 common signs to look for during routine inspections and your daily operating tasks.

3 Signs That it is Time to Replace Your Loading Ramp

If you notice any of the following signs, it may be time to have your ramp replaced:

1. Visible Wear and Damage

If you notice significant damage to your ramp, this can pose a safety risk. Signs of wear and tear can include:

  • Bends and dents in the channel rails.
  • Cracks in welds.
  • Exterior rust.
  • A peeling powder coat.
  • Loose connections.
  • Inoperable hand cranks.
  • The inability to stabilize the ramp on a level surface.

If a model is equipped with electronic adjustment features or wheels for transportation, these must be carefully inspected for damage as well. Flat tires or defective electronics can drastically reduce the utility of any portable loading ramp. Though most wear and tear is caused over time and exposure to the elements, a large portion of it can be avoided. Proper maintenance procedures, storage in winter, and safe operating practices can significantly extend the usable life of your mobile loading ramp.

2. Creaking and Excessive Noise

Though some noise during operation is acceptable, excessively loud creaking can be a sign of cracks or components bending in your ramp. If you start to notice a lot of creaking or noise during operation, take the time to inspect all welds, connections, and support beams. Should a cracking or snapping sound occur during operation, stop using your ramp as soon as possible and have it thoroughly inspected. It is also worth inspecting the top of the ramp and the folding plates to ensure they are in good condition.

3. It is no Longer Suitable for Your Needs

Your portable loading ramp should enhance your operation by allowing your employees to safely and efficiently load/unload trailers and vehicles as needed. If you notice that your loading ramp is starting to slow your operation down or is no longer the safest option for your equipment, it may be time to look into options for a new ramp.
