Cattle Fencing: Choosing the Best Product for Your Herd

11 Oct 2018 Farm Fencing

When deciding on how to fence in your cattle, choosing the best product for your herd is important for the health and safety of your animals. Edge Wholesale Direct hopes to make the job of picking cattle fencing easier, which is why Edge Wholesale Direct offers a range of farm fencing products that can be used to contain your cows.

Know the Purpose of Your Cattle Fencing

When fencing in cows and bulls, it is important to understand the intended purpose of the fence. Perimeter cattle enclosures that pen in your herd need to be strong enough to resist rubbing and pushing, but do not require the same strength and attention as fencing that separates bulls from cows. Many types of fencing will work for this, but woven or high-tensile wire tends to be a good standard as it provides strength and flexibility. Fencing will also need to be stronger close to the gate.

Size and Strength

As a rule, fencing for cattle needs to be at least 55 inches tall. Fence posts need to be strong enough to resist rubbing and pushing, as cattle will often reach under fencing to graze. Woven wire is a good option as it offers flexibility, visibility, and strength when used with posts that are set to the proper depth. While high-tensile wire can be easier and cheaper to use for a perimeter, it can also allow predators in more easily. Increasing the strength of a cattle fence can be done by increasing the thickness of fence posts, setting the posts deeper into the ground, and upping the gauge of the wire used.

Electric Fencing and Barbed Wire

Adding an electric component to your fence will deter livestock from straining whatever barrier you have put in place. If you need to separate bulls from cows, an electrified high-tensile or woven wire fence will discourage the bulls from attempting to destroy the fence. While electric fences are being used more recently, barbed wire can still be quite useful. Running a strand of barbed wire along the top of whatever fence solution you use can help to keep livestock from leaning over the fence, and it can also deter trespassers.
