Deer Fencing: Protecting Your Garden

11 Dec 2018 Farm Fencing, Fencing Products

Deer are beautiful animals to watch but they can be an absolute nuisance if they get into your garden. If deer are getting into your yard and destroying your plants, investing in deer fencing can be instrumental in protecting your garden from these attractive but potentially destructive creatures. Edge Wholesale Direct offers a variety of solutions for garden fencing and farm fencing that can help to keep unwelcome animals off your property.

Methods for Deterring Deer

There are many options that will help to keep deer off your property, including repellants, dogs, or motion detectors and sound machines but the most effective method of deterring deer is a well-constructed deer fence. While many other types of deer deterrent require regular maintenance and mindfulness, deer fencing requires little to no maintenance and is usually the most effective way of keeping your plants safe from deer.

Options for Deer Fencing

There are many ways to construct a deer fence and some are more effective than others. Deer are able to jump incredibly high, which means that most fences will need to be at least 6½ feet to 7 feet tall. If garden fencing is too light in construction or it is not staked to the ground, a deer will be able to crawl under it. For that reason, the best option for deer fencing is galvanized steel deer fencing. This type of fencing is flexible enough to be easily adapted to any shape of garden but not so flexible that a deer is able to move it. The galvanizing on this fence makes it highly resistant to harsh weather conditions and the wide hole spacings make the fence less susceptible to strong winds.

Another excellent option for deer fencing is electric farm fencing. An electric fence can be set to a lower height than regular deer fences, but, in order to deter deer properly, they need to be running almost constantly, as deer can stop by at any time of day or night. One electrified wire set at 30 inches high is usually sufficient to discourage deer from munching on your plants; however, if you are finding that deer are still getting into your garden, another two wires can be set at a foot above and below the first wire.
