Do Crane Operators Need to be Certified?

14 Nov 2019 Mobile Cranes

If you plan on renting a mobile crane for a project in BC, it is important to know when crane operators need to be certified and how to get the proper certifications. As a fully certified and safety-focused crane company, we, at Eagle West Crane and Rigging, know that BC crane operators must always have a WorkSafeBC accepted crane operator certificate in order to be permitted to control a mobile crane. For this reason, all of our crane rentals come with a fully trained and certified crane operator to ensure the safety of your jobsite.

Certification for BC Crane Operators

It is required for any crane operator in the province of British Columbia to have a certificate that is acceptable by WorkSafeBC’s standards in order to operate a boom truck or other mobile crane. Certification is handled by the BC Association for Crane Safety and, while this organization will accept certificates that were administered by some other organizations, operators must always register their certification with BC Crane Safety to be verified and approved for work. This includes certifications from out of province and certificates that were issued by predecessors to BC Crane Safety.

Certifying for Crane Operation with BC Crane Safety

There are three different ways to apply for crane operator certification with BC Crane Safety. You can apply as a new operator, which allows you to work as a trainee or registered apprentice. If you have previous certification, you can apply for recognition by BC Crane Safety. If you are experienced enough and would like to bypass the training and apprenticeship process, you can initiate the challenge process to get your full BC crane operator certification.
