Is There a Difference Between Forklift Ramps and Loading Ramps?

The difference between forklift ramps and loading ramps is mostly found in how each type of ramp is used. Forklift ramps are typically found in shipping yards and warehouses without integrated loading docks, and they are used almost exclusively for forklift traffic. Loading ramps are a much larger classification of equipment that includes forklift ramps as well as other types of ramps for foot traffic, pallet jacks, hand trucks, and other vehicles. While all forklift ramps are loading ramps, not all loading ramps are forklift ramps.

Different Forklift Ramp Designs

The main factor that differentiates forklift ramps from other types of loading ramps is that they are wide enough to accommodate forklift traffic and heavy duty enough to support a fully laden forklift as it loads and unloads trucks, train cars, or shipping containers. All forklift ramps include an inclined plane that provides access from the ground to an elevated level and they often provide a method to span the gap between the ramp and the vehicle being accessed. Aside from these required components, there are many different variations on types of forklift ramps. Some ramps lead to a large platform with multiple loading docks, while others have a much smaller platform. Ramps can include many different options, including wheels for mobility, different transition options, and varying weight capacities.

Custom Loading Ramps

Loading ramps are often used for more than just forklifts, and the designs can vary depending on the type of traffic that they need to accommodate. A loading ramp that will be used mostly for hand trucks and pallet jacks will typically be much smaller than a forklift ramp, while one used to load large automobiles will need to be larger.
