Knowing how to fix peeling exterior paint will provide you with a better understanding of the steps a professional will take to resolve this common issue. At Dunbar Painting, they understand how important it is to fix peeling exterior paint properly. That is why they offer a range of exterior painting services, including fixing areas prone to paint failure.

How to Fix Peeling Exterior Paint

In order to fix peeling exterior paint, a professional painting company will:

1. Clean the Surface

The first step in fixing peeling paint is taking the time to clean the area where the paint is peeling. While doing this, a professional painter will ensure that the surface is clean of any dirt, mildew, or other surface contaminations.

2. Sand the Surface

Once the area has been cleaned, a professional will sand the surface where the paint is peeling until the edges can no longer be peeled back with a fingernail, as doing so will help prevent the area from peeling again after it has been primed and painted. In some cases, sanding down the area may result in a lot of feather sanding. The area will then be dusted, unless the dust has been dispersed by an electric sander or sucked up into the vacuum of the Festool.

3. Prime the Surface

After the area has been sanded until it is no longer peeling, the area will be primed using a XIM peel bond, which is a thicker primer designed to help hold together surfaces that have a tendency to peel, or with an oil primer to help seal the wood. In certain cases, a professional painter may choose to use both an oil primer and XIM peel bond.

4. Paint the Surface

A professional painter will then paint the area with a high-quality paint, such as Benjamin Moore Aura or Sherwin Williams Duration. It is important to note that a professional will not use filler on areas prone to failure, as fillers do not expand and contract like wood and will be a point of premature failure.
