When to Apply Mulch to Flower Beds

While you can technically apply mulch at any time of year, the best time tends to be in the early spring before your perennials have grown too big. Putting down mulch in the early spring tends to be faster and easier, and it helps limit the amount the damage done to plants. Mulch can also be applied in the late fall in colder climates to help protect plants from winter damage, such as frost bite.

How to Apply Mulch to Flower Beds

Before applying mulch to the flower beds around your home, it is important to make sure that you have all of the tools that you will need on hand, such as garden gloves, a rake, a shovel or pitchfork, and a wheelbarrow.

Using your hands or a rake, carefully spread the mulch evenly around the flowers without stepping on them or damaging the plants with the rake. If you are applying mulch next to a tree, shrub, or woody perennial, make sure to keep the mulch about two to three inches from the base of plant. Similarly, try to keep mulch at least 6 inches away from the foundation of your home to prevent insects from coming inside.

How Much Mulch Do You Need?

Mulch should be applied two to four inches thick in your flower bed. Since mulch decomposes over time, make sure to apply an inch more mulch than you want to end up with. Applying mulch in too thin of a layer will mean that the flowers will not receive the same level of benefits from using mulch, such as moisture retention and weed suppression.

To determine how much mulch you will need for your flower beds, take a rough measurement of the garden in square feet and multiply it by how deep you want the mulch to be. Dividing this number by 324 will tell you how many cubic yards of mulch you need to purchase.
