How to Set Up an Electric Fence for Cattle

Electric fences are one of the best ways to keep a herd contained and safe when it comes to permanent pasture fencing. Electric fences are effective against cattle and most predators. Setting Up an Electric Fence for Cattle
There are a couple of procedures for setting up an electric cattle fence. If you already have a fence set up, strands of electric wire can be added to increase security. If you are starting fresh with a new fence, the steps to set up an electric fence are as follows:
1. Mark the Fence Line
Use twine or rope and stakes to mark off the perimeter of the electric cattle fence. Base the size of the perimeter on the size of the herd to avoid crowding.
2. Cut Back Any Branches or Brush
Before installing the fence, it will be important to remove any vegetation that will interfere with the electric fence. Plants can conduct electricity and cause the fence to ground out, making the charge of the fence weaker. Make sure that there are no plants or branches along the fence perimeter.
3. Install Fence Posts
Dig post holes at regular intervals along the perimeter of the electric fence and place wood fence posts or metal T-posts in the holes. Fill the holes back in with dirt while keeping the posts level.
4. Secure the Wires to the Posts
Install insulators that work with the type of posts being used. Thread the wire through the insulators all the way along the perimeter. It is recommended to install wire at multiple heights to keep out a wider variety of predators. Most experts would recommend running 3 to 5 strands of wire.
5. Connect and Activate the Wires
Mount the fence charger and connect every other wire to the charger. Leave the occasional wire unconnected to act as a ground wire. Turn on the charger and test it with a volt meter to ensure that each strand is carrying the required charge.
