How to Fix a Barbed Wire Fence

Regardless of the type of herd being fenced in, strands of barbed wire can often break over time due to animals rubbing against it, repeated impact from branches or other falling debris, or just from the slow wear and tear of the passing of the seasons. Simple Steps to Fix a Barbed Wire Fence
There are many methods to fix a barbed wire fence, but not all of them are easy to perform and not all solutions are equally effective. For the most simple and effective solution to fix a barbed wire fence, observe the following procedure:
Before Getting Started
Before getting started on fixing a strand of barbed wire, assess whether the fence can be fixed or if it should instead be replaced. If there are rust spots along the barbed wire strand or multiple breaks in the strand, it may be better to call your local farm fencing supplier and order a new strand of barbed wire.
Once you know that it is worthwhile to fix the fence, make sure that you have a pair of thick leather gloves, a pair of heavy-duty pliers or a crimping tool, a fence stretcher, and as many fencing sleeves or wire crimps as there are breaks in the fence.
1. Stretch the Fence
Using the fence stretcher, pull one strand of the broken barbed wire fence toward the other until you have enough wire to work with (approximately six to eight inches of overlap).
2. Attach the Fencing Sleeve
Remove any barbs from the wire within about one foot of the area being worked on. Thread the two ends of the broken barbed wire strand through the fencing sleeve or wire crimp. Using the crimping tool or the pliers, crimp the sleeve around the strands as tightly as possible.
3. Splice the Barbed Wires
Separate the ends of the barbed wire strands poking through the crimp so that each of the wires splay out sideways. Wrap the first wire on each side around the strand adjacent to it in a counter-clockwise direction and wrap the second wire on each side in a clockwise direction. This will ensure that the wires will stay in place and not slip through the crimp.
