1. How to Choose the Right Primer
The right type of primer for your home will depend on the surface that is being painted. In most cases, if your home has new dry wall, a professional painter will choose to use a water-based primer to help hide any imperfections and to provide an even base before applying the paint. If you have an older home that has panelling or water damage, a professional may choose to use an oil-based primer.
2. How to Avoid Streaks
To help prevent streaks caused by rolling over paint that is already starting to dry, a professional painter will ensure to keep a wet edge. This is done by painting the full height of the wall and then moving the roller over slightly to overlap the last stroke with the next.
3. How to Determine the Kind of Paint Already on the Walls
Before painting the walls in your home with new paint, it is important to first determine whether oil or latex paint was previously used. A simple paint test can be performed by soaking a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and rubbing it on a small area of the wall. If there is paint residue on the cotton ball, the paint on the wall is latex based and, if there is no residue, the paint is oil based.
4. How to Prevent Leftover Paint from Drying Out
During the process of painting your home, a professional painter will wash out their brushes several times throughout the day to ensure that the paint does not dry on the bristles. At the end of each workday, prior to washing out the brushes used, any cut cans or trays of paint will be dumped back into the main paint can using a brush to clean the paint out as much as possible. Any paint trays that do not have a liner will then need to be cleaned or, if a liner was used, the liner will be thrown out and replaced with a new one. The main paint can lid will then be secured in place and sealed with a hammer.
