Building a raised-bed vegetable garden in your backyard can be the perfect way to keep a well-organized garden space, while also making it easier for you to tend to your garden. AJovak Landscape and Design wants to help you build the vegetable garden of your dreams. That is why their team of landscape construction professionals has put together some simple tips for building a raised garden bed.

How to Build a Raised Garden Bed

If you are thinking about building a raised-bed vegetable garden in your backyard, these tips can help you build the best raised garden for your particular space.

1. Pick the Best Location for Your Raised Garden

When it comes to building a raised vegetable garden, picking the right location can make all the difference in the world. Try to pick an area of your backyard that offers full sun, as most vegetables need a lot of sunlight in order to thrive. You should also consider picking an area that has even ground to make installing your raised bed as simple as possible.

2. Choose a Building Material

Some of the most popular building materials that you can choose to build a raised-bed vegetable garden from include:

Stacked Stone

While stacked stone materials are often more expensive upfront, building a raised garden out of stone rather than wood can mean less structural maintenance in the long run. Stone also provides an aesthetically pleasing look all year round.

Recycled Redwood

Redwood materials tend to be a great option for raised garden beds because they are more resistant to rot than other types of wood. Consider using recycled redwood materials for a more rustic look.

3. Build Your Raised Garden Bed

Before building your raised garden bed, it is important to measure out the space you wish to use. Make sure that your raised beds are no more than 4-feet wide, so that you can easily reach across them, and consider leaving 18-inch paths in between beds to allow for wheelbarrow access.

If you are using wood materials to construct your raised garden bed, the corners of the wood can easily be secured together at the corners with galvanized screws. Raised garden beds made from stone or blocks can be installed with or without the use of mortar.

4. Plant Your Vegetables

Once the raised bed has been built and filled with soil, you can plant the vegetables of your choosing. Carefully plan out your raised vegetable garden bed to make sure that each plant has enough room to grow. If you have more than one bed, make sure to rotate your crops each year to encourage healthy plant growth.
