2 May 2019 Landscape Services
Proper summer lawn care maintenance can help encourage healthy growth. The landscaping experts from Jovak Landscape & Design want to help you maintain a vibrant green lawn all summer long. That is why they have put together some simple landscaping tips for summer lawn care maintenance.
Early Summer Lawn Care Maintenance Tips
Early summer lawn care maintenance should include:
1. Feeding the Lawn
Feeding the lawn in the early summertime can help strengthen the grass, making it easier for it to withstand the heat and drought conditions. Try to use a lawn feed that releases nutrients slowly over time and helps maximize watering by driving water into dry soil. This will allow the grass to build strong, deep roots even in the summer heat.
2. Mowing at the Highest Setting
Having long grass in the summer can help protect the soil and grass roots from sun exposure. While mowing grass shorter means not having to mow the lawn as often, removing no more than 1/3 of the grass blade when cutting will produce the best results and will allow you to keep the lawn healthy while watering less.
3. Leave Clippings on the Lawn
When you mow the lawn, leave the grass clippings as is. Over time, the clippings will break down and help feed your lawn.
4. Watching Out for Weeds
Make sure to spot treat any weeds that appear with a natural weed killer. Using a natural weed killer will remove the weeds without harming the grass.
Mid-Summer Lawn Care Maintenance Tips
Mid-summer lawn care maintenance should include:
1. Mowing at the Right Time
Avoid mowing the lawn at the hottest part of the day or when the lawn is wet from watering. The best time of day to mow the lawn in mid-summer tends to be in the morning or in the evening.
2. Watering Deeply
Make sure to water the lawn long enough that the water is able to reach a depth of 4-6 inches. You can check to see how deep water is penetrating the soil by using a small trowel or a screwdriver.
Late Summer Lawn Care Maintenance Tips
Late summer lawn care maintenance should include:
1. Watering in the Morning
Watering the lawn in the morning will help prevent losing most of the water to evaporation. Try to plan for watering the lawn between 6am-10am for the best results.
2. Sharpening the Mower Blade
Dull mower blades tend to tear grass rather than cut it cleanly. Grass that is torn can often have ragged edges which tend to lose moisture more easily than clean cut grass blades.
