Safety should always be the top priority of everyone involved in any operation that involves mobile cranes and rigging. There is a high risk of injury and damage to property when dealing with heavy loads and heights, so it is important to make sure that every risk is considered and mitigated through the planning process and operation of any hoisting procedure. Safety Standards for Mobile Cranes

When dealing with cranes, the only acceptable risk is no risk. Although different advances in technology and equipment have made cranes safer, it is still important for a crane company to have the proper safety policies in place to ensure that all personnel onsite are kept safe. Some of the ways that an operator can be sure that a hoisting operation is as safe as possible include:

Crane Maintenance

Any crane that has a defect of any kind should not be used until that defect has been taken care of. Cranes should be regularly inspected before and after each job and maintained to prevent any parts from breaking down.

Pre-Hoist Preparation

Before beginning the hoist, an operator should be aware of all other potential work being done in the area and ensure that nobody is in range of the operation. They should also make sure that the load is free of loose materials and that the sling and hoisting ropes and chains have no slack. All obstructions should be cleared to provide a clear path for the hoist to lift materials into place.

General Hoisting Safety

No load being hoisted should ever exceed the maximum load capacity of the crane being used. When hoisting, smooth and calculated movement should be maintained to avoid causing excessive swinging or unpredictable load movement. Only one signaller should be used to avoid confusion, unless it somebody sees something out of place and needs to signal for an emergency stop.
