Tips for Outdoor Lighting for Homes

When considering how best to plan out your home’s outdoor lighting setup, it is important to think of things from a couple of perspectives. Some outdoor lighting tips to keep in mind include:

Consider Security

Although lights can be used so that you can enjoy your yard after dark, it is also important to consider that the lights on the outside of your home also serve as a source of security. Thieves and vandals are less likely to make an attempt on a well-lit home, so consider rigging up your lighting setup to motion sensors or timers.

Consider Safety

Any area that has stairs or other hazards should be well lit to help keep guests and family members safe. There are many attractive options for lighting trails and stairways, and these lights can be set up on a timer to ensure that they are always on when they are needed. Certain types of low walk lights can be installed to illuminate only the path and create a beautiful ambience that does not light up the entire yard, or lanterns can be used to light a larger area.

Use LEDs

Spending a little bit extra out of the gate on LED lights can help to ensure that you actually save money and effort in the long run. You will not need to worry as much about these lights burning out, as LEDs last exponentially longer than any other type of light. You are also able to get more light out of an LED, meaning that you can use them for a wider range of placements and light up larger areas.

Plan for Multiple Options

Make sure that you think ahead about the different reasons that a certain area might need to be lit. Lights for entertaining should be much dimmer than lights for working or security. Consider if certain areas will need multiple lighting solutions and install a fixture that can meet all of the requirements.
