Paddock Fencing for Horses

11 Jun 2020 Farm Fencing

When looking at fencing options for your horses, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by all of the choices out there. Between researching and choosing the best type of fence to use, planning out the fence line, and installing the posts, boards, and mesh, fencing in a paddock can be a pretty big job. At Edge Wholesale Direct, we offer a wide variety of options for paddock fencing for horses, and we can help you to select the best options available for your property.

Fencing Options for Horse Paddocks

When creating a fence for a horse paddock, there are a couple of things that need to be kept in mind. The first priority for any horse fence is visibility. If a horse cannot see a fence, it is liable to run straight into it and injure itself, especially if the fence is made of wire and the horse can get tangled up in it. Another concern is the strength of the fence, as it is important to ensure that your horses cannot break free and wander. While many horses are content to not attempt to break out of a paddock, it is best not to provide the opportunity. It is also important to consider how you intend to keep other animals, such as dogs, coyotes, or any of your neighbours’ animals that might get loose, from getting into the paddock. Some options for horse paddock fencing include:

Wooden Board Fences

One of the best options for a horse paddock is wooden board fencing. It is fairly easy to install and makes for a fairly strong, very visible barrier for horses. Wooden board fencing also can easily be used in conjunction with wire mesh fencing, which can be helpful for keeping out smaller animals.

Wire Mesh Fencing

Wire mesh fencing is a commonly used option for horse paddocks and it is often used along with other fencing systems. Whenever wire mesh fencing is employed, it is incredibly important to make sure that the fence does not have holes big enough for a horse’s hooves to push through, as this can lead to injury for the horse. Wire mesh fencing is a great option because it can be used as a standalone option or it can be stapled to a top rail and posts along wooden or vinyl fencing.
