How to Properly Paint a Home’s Exterior

Knowing how to properly paint a home’s exterior will give you a better idea of what you can expect from a professional painting company. At Dunbar Painting, they follow a strict exterior painting process that is designed to give your home the best finished look possible. The key steps that go into painting a home’s exterior include:
1. Clean the Exterior
Before painting the exterior of your home, a professional painter will take the time to thoroughly clean any areas that are going to be painted. The substrate on the outside of your home will determine if the professional painter will either pressure wash or hand wash the exterior. Houses that have a stucco finish or use certain types of wood can be pressure washed, while older homes and homes that have soft or damaged wood will need to be hand washed.
2. Repair Damaged Surfaces
In the event that carpentry work is needed to repair a damaged section on the exterior of your home, a carpenter will be brought in to assess the rotten wood and to provide a plan on how best to proceed. All carpentry work for repairing damaged surfaces is offered at an additional charge.
3. Remove Loose Paint
If the paint on the exterior of your home is peeling, a professional painter will sand down the edges until they can no longer be peeled off.
4. Caulk Trim
In order to help prevent moisture from seeping into your home, a professional painter will caulk anywhere the vertical trim meets the horizontal trim, such as window frames meeting windowsills. If there are other areas where pieces of trim meet that moisture can get in, they will also be caulked for added protection.
5. Prime and Paint the Exterior
All areas of bare wood, metal rust, and hardie board are then primed in order to ensure that they are properly sealed. Any high glossy surfaces on a home’s exterior will also often be primed to help prevent any adhesion issues. Once the areas on the outside of your home that require priming have been primed, the siding will be spray painted with usually two coats of paint.
6. Paint Trim and Doors
Depending on the size of your home, a professional painter will either hand paint or spray paint the trim and doors. In most cases, trim and doors are painted using a brush and roller, but larger homes with a lot of architectural trim are often sprayed.
