Knowing how to refinish wood siding, doors, and windows will help ensure that all of the natural wood areas on the exterior of your home are being properly maintained. At Dunbar Painting, they understand the importance of looking after wood on the exterior of a home. That is why they offer staining services for doors, windows, siding, soffits, and other natural wood elements.
Refinishing Exterior Wood Surfaces
The process for refinishing exterior wood surfaces on your home will depend on the condition of the wood and the stain.
If the Wood is in Good Condition
If the wood areas on the exterior of your home are still in good condition and the current stain still looks good, a professional will give the surface a light scuff sanding to smooth out the surface. Once the wood has been lightly sanded, two coats of Sansin ENS clear coat will be applied, as the higher the sheen the more protective the coating is; however, if the wood siding on a home is shingles or rough-cut wood, the area will most likely be cleaned and scuff sanded before one coat of Sansin SDF is applied without the need for clear coats or stripping.
If the Stain is Fading or Peeling
In the event that the stain is fading or peeling or if there are various water stains, a professional will mask glass and other areas on the exterior of the home that could be scratched before the wood surfaces are sanded. During the sanding process, Festool dustless sanding will be used when possible to remove the current finish before the area is sanded with a finer grit sandpaper to remove any swirl marks from the stripping. Once the wood has been sanded, a Sansin foundation coat is applied to help the wood accept the new stain. The Sansin SDF stain coat, which can be matched to almost any stain colour (including black or brighter colours), is then applied to the wood, followed by two coats for Sansin ENS clear coat for a protective finish.
In Extreme Cases
If the wood on the exterior of your home exhibits an extreme case of water damage and staining, a professional may choose to treat the wood using chemicals to help remove the water stains; however, this process does not always work and may only yield limited changes. In cases like this, it might be a better option to hire a carpenter to replace the damaged wood.
Caring for Exterior Wood Surfaces
Once the exterior wood siding, doors, windows, soffits, or other natural wood areas on your home have been refinished, it is important to ensure that you properly maintain the wood surfaces. Make sure to apply a clear coat to the wood every three to six years, depending on sun exposure.
