Types of Dentures
Some of the different types of dentures available include:
Full Dentures
Full dentures are designed to replace a full set of teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Dentures that are designed to replace teeth in the upper jaw come with a flesh-coloured acrylic base that covers the gums and the roof of the mouth, while dentures for the lower jaw are shaped like a horseshoe to avoid covering the tongue.
Prior to fitting you for full dentures, your dentist will remove any remaining teeth in the set. Since the jawbone will slowly react to this process and reshape itself over time, your dentist may choose to wait several months before measuring and ordering full dentures. Waiting to measure the mouth rather than doing it right away will help ensure that your new dentures fit perfectly.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures can be used to fill the gap when only a few teeth in the set are missing. Unlike full dentures, partial dentures can be attached to the natural teeth through the use of metal clasps or precision attachments. This type of denture can also be attached to crowns, which can help improve the overall fit of the partial dentures.
Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures are designed to attach to implants in the jawbone that extend outward from the gums. The implants for this type of denture are surgically fitted over several visits to ensure a proper fit. Compared to full dentures and partial dentures, implant-supported dentures offer a higher level of stability.
Implant-supported dentures are available in both bar-retained dentures and ball-retained dentures. Bar-retained dentures feature a thin metal bar that attaches to two to five implants in the jawbone, as well as clips that fix the denture to the bar. Ball-retained dentures often contain sockets that fit onto ball-shaped connectors on the implants.
