Rough terrain cranes are equipped with a 4-wheel drive, 4-wheel steering setup that allows them to navigate all kinds of tight corners and move powerfully over harsh ground. Their large rubber tires also help them to climb over large obstacles, making these cranes ideal for off-road hoisting operations. Because these cranes are reasonably quick and compact, they are fairly easy to move from site to site and make for quick operations.
When to Use a Crawler Crane
When compared with rough terrain cranes, crawler cranes can look incredibly slow and lumbering. These cranes are set on tracks rather than tires, which gives them excellent grip on any kind of slippery, rocky, or otherwise unstable ground, but they are also slow and can take time to load, unload, and set up. Crawler cranes also tend to have a massive maximum hoisting capacity, and this weight capacity combined with their ability to conquer most types of terrain makes these cranes ideal for any job that other vehicles cannot access.
