If you are planning on renting scaffolding on your next jobsite, it is important to be aware of some of the different types of scaffolding rules and regulations to ensure that your jobsite is as safe as possible. Rules and Regulations for Scaffolding in BC

WorkSafe BC has outlined a number of regulations regarding different aspects of scaffolding erection and use. These rules are useful as a baseline to help companies using scaffolding to come up with their own safety regulations. It is important to ensure that all workers present on a jobsite are aware of the risks associated with scaffold structures and what rules are to be followed when using them. Some of the different kinds of regulations set forth by WorkSafe BC include:

Platform Standards

There are specific regulations in place for the platforms on which a worker stands in scaffolding structures. Minimal widths for the platform, opening sizes, guardrail standards and footing standards for non-level platforms are all covered in these regulations.

Structural Components

All structural components for a scaffold must meet engineering code requirements. If any parts need to be added or swapped out from the original structure, those components must meet the manufacturer’s technical data or be approved by an engineer. It is also important to clearly outline the load ratings and erection procedure for each part of the scaffold.

Stability

One of the most important aspects of scaffold safety is the stability of the structure. Making sure that all vertical members are plumb and all horizontal components are level is a good starting point. The types of bearing plates and footing that a scaffold should have are also regulated by WorkSafe BC and companies should have their own written standards for this. Rules should be outlined for how a scaffold is braced or secured to a building or other type of structure being worked on to further ensure security.

Connection Points

It is important to have standards within a company that dictate how a scaffold connects together securely. WorkSafe BC states that all connection points must be completely secure, but many companies can come up with standards for their connection systems to ensure uniformity and safety when assembling a scaffold.
