Types of Waste That Can Be Placed in a Dumpster

26 Feb 2019 Junk Removal

It may seem like there are a lot of rules that dictate what you can and cannot throw in the garbage, but these rules are in place to protect the environment and other people, as well as to reduce the amount of waste that is overloading our landfills. At First Class Waste, they provide dumpster rentals and waste disposal services throughout the Fraser Valley and, in order to help reduce their community’s carbon footprint and keep their environment clean and safe, they have assembled this list of types of waste that can be placed in a dumpster.

What Kind of Waste Can I Put in a Dumpster?

Whether you are doing a renovation, getting rid of yard waste, or even cleaning up a construction site, there are many kinds of waste that are allowed to be disposed of in a dumpster. Some of the types of garbage that can be thrown in dumpsters include:

Organic Waste

Most kinds of organic refuse can be thrown in a dumpster. This includes landscaping waste such as leaves, dirt, plants, sticks, and wood, as well as almost every kind of food scrap. If you run a brewery, winery, or restaurant, most refuse from cooking, brewing, and distilling can be thrown in a dumpster. Although most types of paper products can be thrown in the dumpster, many of these products can also be recycled. Ensure that all paper products are organized and recycled whenever possible.

Construction and Renovation Debris

Although most types of construction debris are allowed in dumpsters, make sure that the type of dumpster is suited to carry the weight of what is being thrown into it. Brick, concrete, and asphalt waste is typically too heavy for front-load dumpsters and should be thrown only in roll-off containers. Other construction materials, such as wood, siding, carpet, and drywall, is usually permitted in dumpsters.

Home Refuse

If you are cleaning out your house or garage, many items will be recyclable. Any electronics, appliances, plastics, cardboard, or books should be taken to a proper recycling plant. Items that can be thrown in a dumpster include most furniture, toys, carpeting, and general household trash.

What Not to Throw in a Dumpster

While there are many items that can be thrown in a dumpster, there are some things that require special attention. Some examples of waste that should not be thrown in a dumpster include:

  • Appliances
  • Electronics
  • Paint
  • Batteries
  • Oil
  • Asbestos
  • Tires
  • Propane tanks or other chemical cylinders
  • Fluorescent light bulbs
