Types of Water Features

11 Dec 2018 Landscape Design

Water features provide gardens with beautiful, tranquil focal points that soothe the senses and attract the eye. There are many types of water features that can be incorporated into a yard. Fontana Landscapes specializes in water feature installations and its experienced experts ensure that each water feature is perfectly suited to the layout of the property upon which it is built.

4 Basic Water Features Types

Whether you are working with a flat landscape or a yard on an incline, there are water features available to compliment your garden. Although there is a broad range of styles and designs, there are four essential types of water features that can be built:

Ponds and Pools

If you are looking for a water feature that embodies vibrant life while remaining serene and tranquil, a pond is the way to go. Ponds have the ability to contain an abundance of life in the form of aquatic flora, fish, frogs, and they often serve as an attraction to birds. A pond offers a variety of options for customization; it can serve as a vivacious water garden, a peaceful reflecting pool, or a mesmerizing fish habitat.

Waterfalls

Waterfalls add a dimension of peaceful sound to any garden. They can use natural elements, like rocks and moss, or they can incorporate brick and concrete for a more manicured look. Waterfalls are the perfect water feature for yards that are not naturally flat, but, if your garden is flat and you want to add a bit of vertical texture, a waterfall can work with any landscape.

Streams

Streams are very similar to waterfalls in that they use a pump to move water from a pool or reservoir to a higher point so that it can flow back down in a lively cascade of beauty; however, where waterfalls are vertical, streams take a more horizontal approach. This type of water feature is often used in conjunction with a bridge and a path so that the entire landscape design can be enjoyed.

Water Fountains

Usually positioned in the middle of a pond or pool, a water fountain uses a pump to shoot water up into the air. Fountains are an invigorating type of water feature that can spray water in almost any shape or shower pattern.

Water features can often be combined to create an intricate system of aquatic beauty.
