Warehouse Space Optimization Techniques

11 Apr 2019 Warehouse Equipment

Utilizing some simple warehouse space optimization techniques can help increase the overall efficiency of working conditions, as well as storage space. At Commander Warehouse, they understand how important it is to have a properly organized work environment. That is why they carry a wide selection of warehouse equipment designed for space optimization and organization.

Tips for Optimizing Your Warehouse Space

Some simple tips of optimizing your warehouse space include:

1. Adjust Racking Heights and Spacing

Before adjusting the heights and spaces between the racking systems in your warehouse, make sure to measure each rack elevation and pallet height, as this will allow you to determine if revamping your racking system will actually be beneficial. If your racking systems have more than 4 to 6 inches of gap between the top of the pallet and the base of the beam, the spaces between shelves can be shortened. When adjusting racking heights and spaces, it is important to take certain factors into consideration, such as forklift operating heights and fire safety precautionary space.

2. Install Mezzanine Flooring

One of the easiest ways to optimize any warehouse is to increase storage space by installing mezzanine flooring. Mezzanines allow access to the unused height of a warehouse space without sacrificing on floorspace. Depending on the weight of the objects you are looking to store, mezzanine flooring can be built out of steel, wood, or stronger materials like concrete, making it the ideal option for storing a wide range of different products.

3. Remove Excess or Unwanted Inventory

Removing excess or unwanted inventory off of your shelves can help clear up valuable storage space. Consider reassessing your sales projections to ensure that you are maintaining the optimum level of inventory to help cutdown on additional stock. It might also be a good idea to look at the stock items that do not perform well and removing them from your inventory.

4. Maximize Vertical Storage Space

While expanding the size of your warehouse can be costly, raising the roof on the building can be a great way to gain additional space for higher shelving systems and more pallet storage; however, before raising the roof on your warehouse, make sure to take the engineering limitations and building codes into consideration.
