What are Facial Peels?

19 Aug 2021 Skin Care

Facial peels, also known as chemical peels, are a type of skin care treatment that is used to rejuvenate the appearance of facial skin. In this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, causing the top layers to exfoliate and peel off. The remaining layers of skin are smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin, resulting in a rejuvenated appearance. In addition to the face, chemical peels can be performed on the neck and hands to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and scar tissue. As leading providers of neuromodulators and other skin care solutions, the team at Bottle Service Beauty understands the importance of choosing the right option for your needs. That is why we have provided some information on what facial peels are to help you make an informed decision.

Benefits of Facial Peels

Facial peels are a proven method for improving the appearance of skin. They can be used to:

  • Reduce fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth.
  • Treat wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging.
  • Reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches.
  • Treat certain types of acne and scar tissue.
  • Improve the look and feel of skin.

Though facial peels improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, the newly exposed skin will be more sensitive to the sun for a brief period. Proper precautions must be taken to keep your skin safe from the sun during this period.

Types of Facial Peels

Facial peels can be divided into 3 different types:

Light/Superficial

In a light facial peel, a mild chemical is used to penetrate only the outer layer of skin to gently exfoliate it. This treatment is used to improve the appearance of mild discoloration, rough skin, and to refresh the feel of the face, neck, chest, or hands.

Medium

For medium facial peels, glycolic or trichloroacetic acid is applied to penetrate the outer and middle layers of skin to remove damaged skin cells. This treatment is used to improve age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, freckles, and moderate skin discoloration. Medium peels also can be used to smooth the feel of rough skin and treat some precancerous skin growths.

Deep

Deep facial peels tend to require the most preparation as they can pose the most risks. Trichloroacetic acid or phenol is applied to deeply penetrate the middle layer of skin to remove damaged skin cells. This treatment removes moderate lines, age spots, freckles, and shallow scars. Patients will see a dramatic improvement in skin appearance, but this procedure can often only be performed once.
