What are Gaskets?

21 Jan 2021 Industrial Dampers

If you are doing any kind of a job involving piping or ventilation, it is important to know what gaskets are, how they function, and the type of gaskets you might need. At Flextech Industries, we design and manufacture a wide variety of gaskets and other piping accessories for use in all kinds of systems. Whether you need a few custom gaskets for a large-scale industrial application or a large number of simple gaskets for a common piping setup, we can help get you what you need.

What are Gaskets?

Gaskets are pieces of material that create a seal between two flanges to connect lengths of pipe to one another. There are many types of gaskets and the one that any particular system might require will depend on what kind of materials are being transported through the piping system, the types of pipes and flanges being used, system temperatures, how much pressure the system will be under, and a variety of other factors. Gaskets are most often flat, but they can occasionally be round or square, depending on how they will be used.

What are Industrial Gaskets Made From?

Gaskets can be made from a wide variety of materials to suit their purposes. High-pressure or high-heat systems may employ gaskets made from asbestos and other highly insulative materials. Gaskets are typically made out of a material that yields slightly to pressure in order to create a tight seal between flanges and prevent material from leaking from the piping system. Some of the common materials used to make gaskets include, but are not limited to:

  • Rubber gaskets
  • Paper gaskets
  • Silicone gaskets
  • Felt gaskets
  • Cork gaskets
  • Neoprene gaskets
  • Metal gaskets
  • Fiberglass gaskets
  • Plastic gaskets

Whatever material is used for the gaskets in a particular system, it is important to ensure that they are able to withstand the temperature and pressure that will be present and that they are resistant to corrosion if necessary.

Why are Gaskets Used?

The main reason that gaskets are used is to create a tight seal between piping connections in order to prevent leaks. Leaks can cause losses in product or pressure, or they can release hazardous materials from contained systems.
