What is Cantilever Racking?
9 Jul 2020 Warehouse Equipment
When it comes to setting up a warehouse space, it is important to first establish what kind of racking system will work best for your unique products. While most businesses tend to opt for pallet racking, cantilever racking systems tend to be the better option for storing longer products like pipes and lumber. At Commander Warehouse, they can help ensure that you understand what cantilever racking is and whether or not it is the best type of racking for organizing your warehouse.
What are Cantilever Racks?
Cantilever racking is designed to allow for the storage and organization of items that cannot be easily stored on pallets. Warehouses will often use uprights that support cantilever arms, allowing for longer and heavier items to be stored horizontally across multiple arms.
While cantilever racks offer different storage options than pallet racking, cantilever racks can also store traditional pallets, depending on how the racking is configured; however, cantilever racks only allow for pallets to be stored one-row deep.
How do Cantilever Racks Work?
Cantilever racks are made up of four key components:
- Base—typically made from steel, the base provides strong support and extends out from the bottom of the rack to counterbalance the heavy weight of the stored items.
- Uprights—extremely strong vertical posts that are designed to provide support to the arms.
- Arms—these act as the shelves for storing inventory and they extend outwards from the uprights.
- Supports—these work to connect the uprights in order to provide the racking system with extra strength.
Is Cantilever Racking Right for Your Warehouse?
Whether or not cantilever racking is the best option for your warehouse will depend on your storage needs. If your warehouse tends to store larger, bulkier items that do not fit on traditional pallets, cantilever racking will be the ideal solution for your warehouse space, as it will provide the flexibility needed to store all of your products. Cantilever racking systems are easy to install and reconfigure and they can be arranged in ways that pallet racking systems cannot.
