What is the Best Way to Backup Files?

Getting into the habit of backing up your business’ important files on a regular basis will help ensure the files are as safe and secure as possible. If you are unsure about what the best way to backup files is, the IT experts from Next Hop Solutions can help you select the best backup solutions for your business’ unique requirements. In order to help you make an informed decision, their team has put together a list of some of the different options available for data backup.

1. Cloud Storage

Cloud storage allows you to move files from a computer onto a server at a data centre located on a different premises from the business. Depending on the type of plan you sign up for, the cloud storage provider will give you access to a certain amount of space in which your files can be stored. The files can then be upload using a desktop application or through an Internet connection. While your files are being stored on the server, you will still be able to view, modify, and delete them as needed.

2. External Hard Drive

External hard drives are small and portable hard disk drives that can be connected to a computer through a USB cable in order to provide extra storage. Once an external hard drive is connected to a computer, files can be copied onto the external drive. Any files that are placed on the external hard drive will live safely away from the computer, giving you an extra copy of your files just in case the computer is ever damaged or stolen.

3. USB Flash Drive

Similar to an external hard drive, USB flash drives (also known as thumb drives or jump drives) also provide you with a portable option for backing up your computer files; however, unlike external hard drives, flash drives use flash memory—a storage chip that can be erased and reused—and are small enough to be attached to a keychain or lanyard. Flash drives can be plugged into a computer using a USB port, allowing you to easily copy and store files on the drive until you decide to remove them.

4. Network Attached Storage (NAS)

A network attached storage (NAS) system is a type of server that is specifically designed for saving data. NAS systems can either operate wired into a computer or wirelessly over the Internet, depending on the drive and computer. Once it has been configured, the NAS will appear as if it is just another drive on the computer but will allow for more than one computer to store and access files on the system at a time.
